"Flowers speak to us when we know how to listen to them--it is a subtle and fragrant language." (The Mother)
The rishis of ancient India discovered the One Existence in all things. They saw the animate and inanimate alike as manifestations of Spirit pervaded through and through with living consciousness. They recognised not only the divinity of all but also the uniqueness and individuality of each. What they saw was codified and recorded in the holy scriptures, the Shastras. These rishis did not know by the mind or the senses. They perceived by a direct inner vision and identity with the object of perception. Of all animate and inanimate things on earth they found that flowers are nature’s purest manifestation of the Divine. They knew that each flower embodies in its color, form and fragrance a particular vibration or consciousness and that contact with a flower can bring one into contact with that vibration. For this reason flowers were commonly used in all forms of worship, offering and devotion. Through the ages flowers became an integral part of Indian culture playing a very significant though often forgotten role.

Savitri - 60

Sri Aurobindo's Savitri
Daily Savitri - 60

Can rase the fixed interminable line
That joins these changing names, these numberless lives,
These new oblivious personalities
And keeps still lurking in our conscious acts
The trail of old forgotten thoughts and deeds,
Disown the legacy of our buried selves,

- Savitri by Sri Aurobindo, Book 1, Canto -II, The Issue, Page 12

Sri Aurobindo's epic poem, Savitri, is a symbolic myth that responds to a deeply felt need in the contemporary mind. Not only does it represent a world view that is in harmony with the most recent understanding of scientific reality; but, as a symbol, it penetrates to the essential truth of that reality. It concomitantly describes what is involved in the fulfillment of a spiritually individuated life. This is the goal of Jung's myth of consciousness for our time. Not only is Savitri a vision for individual and collective self-fulfillment, but, as a mantra, it has a directly transformative effect on the inner consciousness. Such a magnificent poem calls for intelligent reflection.

Why is Consecration Powerful? - Message of the Day - June 28

Why is Consecration Powerful?

  • * We pray, consecrate and see the result. The how must be explained.
  • * We live in Ignorance that stumbles. Ignorance is Truth inverted or self-absorbed. (The chapter on Knowledge and Ignorance in The Life Divine explains how.)
  • * Truth is all-powerful as it is the objective status of the subjective Existence (Sat).
  • * Sat, the Existence is subjective. Truth is its objective state. Spirit relates both.
  • * Spirit is described as the experience of Existence (Sat).
  • * Truth is powerful as it is an expression of Existence which is the first manifested condition of The Absolute.
  • * In us, there are running thoughts, thinking, and understanding.
  • * In the mind is the observer, thinker, Person who performs these activities respectively.
  • * Behind the Person is the Being, the Purusha.
  • * The Purusha, the Being has the two parts of the immobile soul and evolving soul.
  • * They are called Manomaya Purusha (a portion of the central being in mind that does not evolve) and the mental psychic.
  • * The psychic emerges when the ego gives way.
  • * The psychic can spread all over the universe.
  • * The psychic mind touches everyone’s mind as it has the universal element in it.
  • * Someone owes you money and delays payment.
  • * Your ego demands the payment. His ego has its own arguments. Both are separative.
  • * Problems are created by the separativeness of egos.
  • * Concentration moves the Person to the immobile Purusha.
  • * Consecration moves from the Person to the Psychic.
  • * The psychic is the mental version of the Ishwara in the Supermind.
  • * When the psychic receives the problem from the ego through consecration, it does not have a separatist view.
  • * It knows what is RIGHT.
  • * Its right is the same as the right of every other man, even the rival.
  • * The right in your mind communicates itself to the right in the man who owes you money.
  • * The force required here for $100 and $1 million is the same, even as the calling of the next house and overseas on the phone uses the same instrument and system.
  • * His mind arrives as the same conclusion as yours. He pays.
  • * As the psychic is in the subtle plane, action is instantaneous.
  • * Only in the gross plane, which is in Time, does it take time.
  • * Calling Mother after consecration adds Mother’s force to the psychic action.
  • * Mother’s Force elevates the mental action to the Supermind.
  • * Mother is born at Consciousness-Force.
  • * Mother is the Shakti of Ishwara.
  • * Ishwara is the psychic in the Supermind.
  • * The psychic at its own level solves the problem.
  • * As the psychic is in touch with the Ishwara with whom Mother is in touch, calling Mother adds to the force.
  • * This opens new higher possibilities.
  • * Consecration moves the ego created problem out of separative self-assertion in Time and Mind to the Psychic which is beyond Time and outside mind to bring it in touch with the universal mind on the one side and the Mother on the other side. Thus, consecration solves the problem.
  • * Life Response is created by moving from the ego to the psychic in this example.

Savitri - 59

Sri Aurobindo's Savitri
Daily Savitri - 59

That hour had fallen now on Savitri.
A point she had reached where life must be in vain
Or, in her unborn element awake,
Her will must cancel her body's destiny.
For only the unborn spirit's timeless power
Can lift the yoke imposed by birth in Time.
Only the Self that builds this figure of self

- Savitri by Sri Aurobindo, Book 1, Canto -II, The Issue, Page 12

Savitri - 58

Sri Aurobindo's Savitri
Daily Savitri - 58

Twelve passionate months led in a day of fate.
An absolute supernatural darkness falls
On man sometimes when he draws near to God:
An hour arrives when fail all Nature's means;
Forced out from the protecting Ignorance
And flung back on his naked primal need,
He at length must cast from him his surface soul
And be the ungarbed entity within:

Power of Prayer - Message of the Day - June 26

Power of Prayer

  • ¨       It is true people have faith in God. It is equally true that people do not have faith in God  in the proper sense of the word.
  • ¨       What is more true is people have confidence in themselves, in their families and in the society.
  • ¨       Most prayers are wish fulfilment that is sanctioned by one of the above powers.
  • ¨       God is true and He exists in all the planes.
  • ¨       Man does not often reach God or do his prayers ever reach God.
  • ¨       In extreme moments of danger, a deep anguish raises a voice which does reach God.
  • ¨       Popular religions we can safely say are irreligious.
  • ¨       As the body cures itself when the doctors give up, and the vital solves problems when all known social supports prove infructuous, Man has not risen to his Mind for it to show its prowess. It happens when a genius gives up a long-standing problem. It rises as a revelation.
  • ¨       The gods of each plane respond to man when he overreaches a plane.
  • ¨       To illustrate each of these observations with an example will make it clear.
  • ¨       The innumerable examples in ‘The Power of Positive Thinking’ will fit into all of the above categories.
  • ¨       Piety is in inverse proportion to prosperity is a general observation.
  • ¨       To separate the power of God, in fact gods, from the power of one’s own personality and further see how one acts through another is a fruitful scrutiny.
  • ¨       To know where ONE is with respect to piety and faith in God as his own life reveals to him will make for clarity, at least to the believers.
  • ¨       Knowledge is the capacity to know and understand. When one has it, he becomes a genius.
  • ¨       What we get from the school is education, the knowledge another has gained, just as a user gets a product another has discovered and designed.
  • ¨       In the ascent of consciousness, man unconsciously accomplishes and equips his posterity with them.
  • ¨       As in education or scientific discovery, so in Spirituality.
  • ¨       God and Spirituality are for those who have knocked at the door of the Absolute and found entry.
  • ¨       To all the rest of us, the Spirit is unknown. We worship the gods another person has discovered.
  • ¨       Coming back to the analogies of education and products, we have dozens or hundreds of versions of them, even outside the schools or the fresh products from the shop.
  • ¨       Education comes to us through the post, from the libraries, journals, printed materials, conferences, newspapers, gossip, public meetings and finally our own foolish thinking of them.
  • ¨       The product has other versions of imitations, used ones, assembled ones, broken products repaired, improvised, etc.
  • ¨       When a man was operated upon they found it was an advanced hopeless case. His daughter prayed to Mother. He was cured of cancer and survived. The ignorant patient believed that as the operation was completed, he was cured.
  • ¨       Antonio’s ship returning in Merchant of Venice is a Life Response, not the work of God. It was a response to the goodness of Antonio.
  • ¨       Suppose we have the knowledge to separate the issues where the powers of the body, vital, and mind respond to relieve our problems, we shall discover that God has no place in our lives and our prayers are the finest expressions of superstition.
  • ¨       The original or natural powers of the body, vital, and mind are enormous and our organised personality stifles them. Our prayers are from the organised personality.
  • ¨       Religion is the superstition of the ignorant masses about the Reality. At its best, it shades off into Spirituality.
  • ¨       Only the saints of the land have seen God. They are not inclined to pray often. They rarely resort to it.
  • ¨       Self-awareness is a virtue. It is a practically significant virtue in the field of spirituality. Spiritual seekers do not have any illusions in this regard. The problem is only for the uninitiated laity.
  • ¨       In the literature of the earlier centuries, we see God figures so often as HE was a member of our life. What we know now as an action of gravity, chemistry, medicine,  mathematics, etc. they attributed to God, ignorant of all of them.
  • ¨       In other words, God is what we do not know at present.
  • ¨       Now, in this century, we do NOT know of life and its forces in an intelligible way. But life is full of such events. We do not always attribute them to God. We say it is luck or refuse to label it God. That is the measure of our rationality.
  • ¨       Gods, as they are known, are subtle beings having enormous powers ranging from restoring a dead person to life and getting a lost object.
  • ¨       At their height, they are overmental Gods--Shiva, Vishnu, Lakshmi, Indira, Ganesh, etc. To reach them there are austerities—Nonbu, Viratham, Dhavam, etc. When they are pleased they grant our prayers.
  • ¨       Behind every collective activity of long established social activities--marriage, agriculture, games, festivals, cooking, stealing, wishing--there is a being which when reached will be able to act miraculously.
  • ¨       The ship’s crew, the fishermen, mountaineers and all those who live a life of constant danger or insecurity know these powers and have well developed or articulated procedures to commission them into personal use.
  • ¨       The posterity of the West is the blessing their own developed individuality has conferred on them.
  • ¨       We know we do not pray when the work goes on smoothly.
  • ¨       Our special interest here is to know the extent of our faith in Mother.
  • ¨       As Mother is all around us and rushes into action the moment action is initiated, it is difficult to distinguish one from the other.
  • ¨       At times of national, crisis we get 25 versions of an event like September 11, 2001. What we ultimately believe is the news report. There is no way of knowing it first hand.
  • ¨       Not only news of war in another country, we know that at times of family crisis, we get not 25 but 200 versions of one event that took place an hour ago in our absence. How can anyone know the Truth?
  • ¨       We certainly do not realise that that is the same truth about what we consciously plan and do as our consciousness is unconscious.
  • ¨       A fool often ventures to think about what his own brothers are up to with him. The more he thinks of it, the more bewildering a confusion it is.
  • ¨       Gandhiji espoused non-violence for 30 or 40 years and discovered that non-violence was a myth.
  • ¨       Except the discoveries of genius, an examination of every sacred faith of the past is now discovered to be a faith of ignorance.
  • ¨       Is there NO way of one knowing Mother? Yes. There is.
  • ¨       The only way of knowing Her is to become a Rishi as Vasista or Viswamitra. There is no short cut to it.
  • ¨       Sri Aurobindo offers a short cut and describes it as the longest route. He discloses his divine secret to discover the Secret for which He came on earth.
  • ¨       He calls it Sincerity, Receptivity, Opening in yogic language. In human parlance, it is to be TRUE, utterly true.

Savitri - 57

Sri Aurobindo's Savitri
Daily Savitri - 57

Flew past her eagle-winged through memory's skies.
As in a many-hued flaming inner dawn,
Her life's broad highways and its sweet bypaths
Lay mapped to her sun-clear recording view,
From the bright country of her childhood's days
And the blue mountains of her soaring youth
And the paradise groves and peacock wings of Love
To joy clutched under the silent shadow of doom
In a last turn where heaven raced with hell.

Along the fleeting event's far-backward trail
Regressed the stream of the insistent hours,
And on the bank of the mysterious flood
Peopled with well-loved forms now seen no more
And the subtle images of things that were,
Her witness spirit stood reviewing Time.
All that she once had hoped and dreamed and been,

Mind to SuperMind - Message of the Day - June 25, 2012

The best form of knowledge for the physical mind is analogy,
the thinking mind is argument or law,
the vital emotion is harmonious feeling,
the vital sensation is excitement,
the physical body is skill or power or a feeling of fullness,
the higher mind is silence,
the illumined mind is vision,
the intuitive mind is direct knowledge,
the Overmind is the Formulated Form,
the Supermind is the triune truth of each in all, all in each and all as each.

What is Spirituality to Indians? - Message of the Day - June 22, 2012

What is Spirituality to Indians?

Spirit and religion go together in the mind of the common man. But the difference is as essential as between a tub and a well. A religion is born when a great soul attains illumination and the population gathers around him to follow his path. Spirituality is each man seeking his own inner illumination.

India is a land of Rishis. Not hundreds but thousands have attained spiritual enlightenment. At a time when a car was a rarity in the small towns of India, the American worker was arriving at his factory in his own car. A long time ago, the Indian fashioned his entire life by the Truths of the Spirit, as the Indian atmosphere was overflowing with the light of the Spirit. It was a period when India was strikingly prosperous. What was rare all over the world was commonplace in India. But it was religious worship, following the footsteps of great souls. Today that has not been given up, but such a way of life has lost its vigour or life.

Since then, human progress turned to the arena of science. Now what rules the world is not religion but science. Science is great; its achievements are myriad. Science is the quest of Mind that probes into the processes of things so that it may master it and produce it or mass-produce it. Science has yielded technology. Technology is expressing the mental scientific knowledge in matter so that a new tool is born to enrich life. It can never replace the Spirit which is the ultimate substance of our existence.

If technology – mental knowledge expressing in a material tool – can render life comfortable, Spirit expressing in life can make it divinely abundant and opulent. Today India, along with the rest of the world looks to the USA for leadership. As long as India was a subject nation, it was suffering the cancer of self-degradation. No long is this true. But She is poor, very poor. As Freedom was the goal before 1947, Prosperity is the need of the hour. Naturally, the tool for that prosperity is considered to be technology. No. India should reach Prosperity through Spirituality, subordinating technology to that aim. That way, She will reach the goal quicker and not face the side effects of increased technology in life – a deadening of the life spirit.

A glorified technology will not lead to a glorious life. It is capable of dehumanising our life. The entire world will give up the primacy of science and technology soon. That is not the future of Mankind. The future of the world belongs to Spirituality and not religion. Nor does it belong to science, but to the Science of Life. Mind must move from life sciences to the Science of Life.

Savitri - 55

Sri Aurobindo's Savitri
Daily Savitri - 55

Awhile, withdrawn in secret fields of thought,
Her mind moved in a many-imaged past
That lived again and saw its end approach:
Dying, it lived imperishably in her;
Transient and vanishing from transient eyes,
Invisible, a fateful ghost of self,
It bore the future on its phantom breast.

- Savitri by Sri Aurobindo, Book 1, Canto -II, The Issue, Page 11

How to do Three Day prayer to solve problems? - Message of the Day - June 21, 2012

How to do THREE-DAY PRAYER ?

The Spirit is invoked in several ways. One method that is wholly suitable to the uninitiated is prayer, especially if it is undertaken for three full days. This is a suitable method to solve problems or avail of opportunities.

Problems often present themselves. Some are a bother, others are a threat. A boy who has turned fugitive, a sum of money lent long ago, an electric connection not available for a long time, etc., qualify as household problems. One who is a diligent worker is overlooked when the time for promotion arrives. This is a major problem of career.

It is true that the Spirit, when invoked ONCE, dissolves the problem. Why, then, should we sit and pray for 72 hours or 12 hours on each of the three consecutive days? It is because the lay person does not generate enough concentration to invoke the Spirit once unless he sits quiet for three full days.

The Spirit emerges once or a few times when the mind falls silent in a quiet body.

Power of Three - Day -  Prayer:

Practically one chooses three free days and sits for 12 hours during the day, say 7 am to 7 pm except for the break for meals. He must formulate his prayer in concise words

- (such as, “My boy should return”) . It is done better in the mother tongue and goes on silently repeating in his mind.

No one who has resorted to this method failed to arrive at the result. Often the result arrives before three days are over and he wonders whether the ritual of the three days must be fulfilled. It is not necessary. In some rare cases, maybe three or four, the results arrived before the sitting was commenced.

The Spirit comes to the surface in response to the truth of calling. Sincerity to the inner Spirit dispenses with the prolonged sitting.

Savitri - 54

Sri Aurobindo's Savitri
Daily Savitri - 54

The sacrifice of suffering and desire
Earth offers to the immortal Ecstasy
Began again beneath the eternal Hand.
Awake she endured the moments' serried march
And looked on this green smiling dangerous world,
And heard the ignorant cry of living things.
Amid the trivial sounds, the unchanging scene
Her soul arose confronting Time and Fate.
Immobile in herself, she gathered force.
This was the day when Satyavan must die.

Definition written by the Mother for the Symbol:

  • The descending triangle represents Sat - Chit - Ananda.
  • The ascending triangle represents the aspiring answer from matter under the form of life, light and love.
  • The junction of both - the central square is the perfect manifestation having at its centre the Avatar of the Supreme - the Lotus.

Savitri - 53

Sri Aurobindo's Savitri
Daily Savitri - 53

A stone-still figure of high and godlike Pain
Stared into Space with fixed regardless eyes
That saw grief's timeless depths but not life's goal.
Afflicted by his harsh divinity,
Bound to his throne, he waited unappeased
The daily oblation of her unwept tears.
All the fierce question of man's hours relived.
